Skara Brae: The Village Under the Sand

Every account of Skara Brae opens with the storm of 1850 stripping the turf off a dune at the Bay of Skaill and exposing a village that had been buried for four thousand years. Even that opening sentence has a dispute attached. The Orkney historian Ernest Marwick called the story a complete fiction, pointing to a journal entry by James Robertson from 1769, eighty years before the storm, describing ancient structures already visible in the dunes of Skaill. Orkney researchers have since pushed back on Marwick: Robertson's square catacombs, with a skeleton holding a sword, read like the Bronze Age burial cists of the nearby links rather than the village, and the minister George Low, surveying the same ground in 1773, knew nothing of any buried houses. So the storm story largely stands, with one honest correction: something came to light in 1850, William Watt of Skaill dug out four stone houses, and the burial and the exposure of the village were both more gradual than the single dramatic night the retellings prefer.

A century of rough handling

Watt brought in the antiquarian George Petrie, who dug further and catalogued the beads, tools and ornaments coming out of the sand. Work stopped in 1868. In 1913 the site was plundered over a single weekend. A storm in 1924 damaged House 3 and finally prompted a professional response, along with the seawall. Some accounts date that storm to December 1925. Vere Gordon Childe of the University of Edinburgh arrived in 1927 and worked on the site into the 1930s, publishing a provisional report in the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in 1929 and his final report there in 1931. His book of the same year was titled Skara Brae: A Pictish Village in Orkney, which is the shortest available summary of how wrong the dating was. A detail recovered only in 2019 is that four women, Margaret Simpson, Margaret Mitchell, Mary Kennedy and Margaret Cole, appear in the excavation photographs as participants rather than the visitors they had been assumed to be.

Childe was wrong by two and a half thousand years

Childe read the village as Iron Age, somewhere around 500 BC. That is the single largest correction in the site's history, and it took radiocarbon to make it. The excavations of 1972 and 1973, led by David Clarke, settled the chronology: occupation began around 3100 BC and ran for roughly six centuries to about 2500 BC. Skara Brae is therefore older than the Great Pyramid, and the man who dug it thought it was two and a half thousand years younger than it is. That is not an argument against archaeology. It is archaeology working: a dating method arrived, and the conclusion changed.

There is a gap in that story which deserves naming, because it rarely gets named. Clarke's campaign has never been published in full. Material suitable for dating was collected, the Neolithic attribution is secure and the dates themselves are not in doubt, but the excavation behind them is not available for scrutiny, and that is an acknowledged hole in the record for a site of this importance. It is also why we give the range as roughly 3100 to 2500 BC, the round figures Historic Environment Scotland uses, rather than the 3180 that circulates. A start date quoted to the decade implies a published calibration that nobody can point you to.

The same excavations reached waterlogged deposits that preserved organic material, including a twisted skein of heather, one of very few surviving pieces of Neolithic rope, and a wooden handle. They also produced barley grains from the midden, which overturned Childe's belief that the villagers did not farm.

It was not a seaside village

The photographs mislead, and so does standing there. Skara Brae today is a row of houses on the lip of an exposed bay with the Atlantic in front of them. When it was lived in it stood inland, beside a freshwater loch, sheltered from the open sea, and the two headlands that now bracket the Bay of Skaill are thought to have been joined at the time, forming a barrier across it. The dunes, the exposure and the erosion that comes with them are later developments. Nearly everything written about the atmosphere of the place, the wind and the salt and the grey water, is a description of the modern setting rather than the Neolithic one.

Furniture in stone

Orkney has almost no trees, so the villagers built in flagstone. The local Old Red Sandstone is fine-grained and splits naturally along its bedding into flat slabs, which means it can be laid into walls, shelves and beds without mortar and without dressing. Stone does not rot. That is the whole reason there is furniture here and almost nowhere else.

Eight to ten dwellings are visible today, along with Building 8, which was probably a workshop, linked by four low passages, some of which still carry their original roofing slabs. Each house is a single room of about 40 square metres, and the layout repeats: a square room around a central hearth, a stone dresser facing the door, beds set against the walls with the right-hand bed larger than the left, and small tanks set into the floor and sealed with clay to hold water, most likely for keeping limpets alive as fishing bait. Stone pillars at the bed ends may have carried a canopy of hide or fur. Doors were low, closed with a stone slab and secured with a bone bar that slid into holes cut in the jambs, and the entrances generally face south or south-east, for reasons nobody has established. Drains run under at least five of the houses and the full extent of the system has never been mapped.

Two things about these houses are not known, and are usually presented as though they were. The first is the roof. None of it survives. Corbelled stone would work over a span this small, and so would hides, turf or timber, and the excavated evidence cannot choose between them. Every cutaway drawing you have seen of a Skara Brae house contains an invented roof, and the honest ones say so in the caption.

The second is what the sameness means. Because the houses are near identical, with no visibly richer or poorer dwelling among them, many archaeologists read the village as broadly egalitarian. Others point out that the dresser stands opposite the door in the most conspicuous position in the room, which is what a display surface for status objects looks like, and that a settlement organised around a controlled passage network is one in which somebody is controlling access. Archaeology on its own may not settle it.

One correction worth making, because tour copy still gets it wrong: the houses are not underground. They are free-standing buildings sunk into and supported by heaps of midden, the settlement's own accumulated refuse, which insulated the walls and carried part of their load. The rubbish is structural rather than decorative. Building 8 breaks the pattern completely. It stands apart, has walls over 2 metres thick, no dresser, and is divided into cubicles, and the debris in it points to tool-making rather than living.

What they had

The villagers kept cattle, pigs and sheep, grew barley, and ate a great deal of fish and shellfish; fish bones and shells are common in the midden. They made pins up to 25 centimetres long, of bone and of ivory, walrus or whale rather than elephant, along with awls, needles, beads, and the sharp stone flakes known as Skaill knives. They had lumps of red ochre and polished haematite, which suggests pigment on skin or objects. Carved stone balls were found here, and what they were for is unknown; some carry spiral ornament, and a stylistic link to objects from the Boyne valley in Ireland has been argued in the literature. That link is an interpretation rather than a description, and it is worth quoting as one, because it would be a long way to carry a fashion. The site also holds the earliest known record in Europe of the human flea.

Their pottery matters more than any single object. Grooved Ware appears to have developed in Orkney early in the third millennium BC and then spread through Britain and Ireland, reaching Durrington Walls in quantity and the builders of the first phase of Stonehenge. The usual mental map has ideas travelling from the rich south to the remote north. On this evidence the traffic ran the other way.

One alignment question, and no answer to it

Orkney's wider Neolithic landscape contains monuments with clear solar alignments, Maeshowe above all, so it is a reasonable question whether the village shared that framework. The suggestion has been made that House 7 faces the midwinter sunrise.

Nobody has published measured bearings for it. No formal archaeoastronomical study has demonstrated it at the settlement itself, and until one exists it is a proposal rather than a finding, so it is not going into a caption here. We raise it because the alternative is a silence that leaves the impression the question does not exist. It does exist. It is simply unresolved.

Nobody knows why it emptied

The dramatic account, given by Evan Hadingham among others, has the villagers fleeing a catastrophe, leaving valuables behind, one woman's necklace breaking as she squeezed through a doorway. Anna Ritchie rejected it flatly: a popular myth, she writes, would have the village abandoned during a massive storm that threatened to bury it in sand instantly, but the truth is that its burial was gradual and that it had already been abandoned, and for what reason no one can tell.

Specialists have since gone further than Ritchie needed to. The sudden-catastrophe version is not supported by the stratigraphy and is now largely discounted. The scattered personal ornaments that made the story attractive have a better explanation available: the deliberate deposition of objects as part of structured abandonment, a practice attested across Neolithic Orkney and reinforced by what has come out of the Ness of Brodgar. The beads were probably not dropped in a panic. They were probably left on purpose. What is genuinely unresolved is why the village was left at all, not whether it was left in a hurry.

The wider pattern is that Neolithic Orkney wound down rather than fell: Barnhouse was abandoned around 2600 BC, Skara Brae around 2500 BC, and the great complex at the Ness of Brodgar around 2200 BC. Deteriorating climate, colder and wetter, is the usual suggestion. It is a suggestion.

The sand that buried the village also kept it, and the sea that exposed it is still working. A seawall now protects the site. Structures are eroding out of the cliff edge, and what you can walk around is probably a fraction of what is there: magnetic anomaly survey reported in the early 2000s suggests the excavated village may be as little as one fifth of the original settlement, and a large eroding mound about 100 metres to the west shows multiple structural phases separated by layers of wind-blown sand. A climate risk assessment published in 2019 judged the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site extremely vulnerable to rising seas, heavier rainfall and severe storms, with Skara Brae specifically at risk of being partly destroyed by a single bad one, and a 2021 Historic Environment Scotland research report by Rennie and colleagues set out a refined method for assessing that erosion, with Skara Brae as one of its case studies. The village has now been out of the sand for longer than is good for it.

What our engines found

We ran the same test here as everywhere else, with the settings fixed in advance and identical at every one of the fifty sites we cover: a 200 km search radius, at least 12 km between sampled sites, 15 sites, a 2 per cent tolerance, and 2,000 Monte Carlo runs against a null model resampled from real catalogued sites in the same region. The settings are frozen because the answer moves if you tune them, and tuning them after seeing the answer is exactly the trick we object to elsewhere. Skara Brae returned 33 golden-ratio pairs where chance predicts 37.4, giving p = 0.7131.

That is fewer than chance would predict, and it is not significant. The control points the same way: the arbitrary ratio 2.0 scored 1.14 times its expected count against phi's 0.88, so nothing here singles out the golden ratio.

The collinear test is the one that does return something: 25 three-site alignments against 12.4 expected, p = 0.0200. Before anyone builds on that, the honest caveat is terrain. Sites string out along river valleys, coastlines and narrow necks of buildable land, and geography produces straight lines without anyone planning them. It is a number worth investigating, not a conclusion.

We publish the misses because a tool that only reports its hits is not measuring anything. Every figure above is reproducible from the same coordinates, the same settings and the same seed.

One limit worth stating plainly, because it is the one most often glossed over. This test compares positions between monuments. It says nothing about any building's own proportions, its height, base, slope or perimeter. That is a separate question, and at several sites a genuinely open one.
