Great Zimbabwe: The City They Said Africans Could Not Have Built

The outer wall of the Great Enclosure runs roughly 278 metres around, stands up to about 11 metres high and 5 metres thick at the base, and not one stone in it is held by mortar. Treat all three of those numbers as approximate: published figures for the walls, the total stone volume and the number of construction phases vary considerably between sources, and the site was so heavily disturbed before anyone recorded it that some of them can no longer be checked. UNESCO describes the enclosure as an ellipse of about 100 metres by 80 metres, which is consistent with a perimeter near 280 rather than the 250 that circulates widely. The granite of the surrounding hills weathers into slabs along its own horizontal joints, and the builders worked with that, breaking blocks off exfoliating outcrops, dressing them by knapping, and laying them in courses so even the wall reads as brickwork from a distance. Stability comes from mass and careful coursing alone. It is the largest ancient structure in Africa south of the Sahara, and it was raised by a Shona-speaking state whose capital stood on and below this granite hill.

"Great Zimbabwe" is not one monument but three zones. The Hill Complex is the oldest, built among the boulders of the granite kopje and probably both a royal residence and a ritual focus. The Great Enclosure stands in the valley below. Between and around them lie the Valley Ruins, a scatter of smaller stone enclosures. Most photographs, this article's included, show the Great Enclosure, because it is the most photogenic. It is not the whole city and it is not the beginning of it.

Two numbers the textbooks got wrong

The first is the population. The figure of 18,000 people appears in school textbooks, museum panels and most articles about the site. It descends from Thomas Huffman's work in the 1980s, and in 2017 Shadreck Chirikure, Tom Moultrie, Foreman Bandama, Collet Dandara and Munyaradzi Manyanga took it apart in PLOS ONE. Their objection is demographic. Huffman's model applied a 1960s Rhodesian population pyramid to a precolonial population whose life expectancy ran somewhere in the range of 25 to 30 years with very high child mortality, which is a different age structure altogether. Rebuilding the estimate from hut counts and Shona household sizes of four to seven people, they conclude the total is unlikely to have exceeded 10,000 at any point across an occupation of some 800 years. They note, pointedly, how the inflated figure seeped unquestioned into textbooks and public knowledge. It is still in circulation, including in recent archaeological papers and in UNESCO's own description of the property, so this is a live disagreement rather than a closed one. The honest range to quote is roughly 10,000 to 20,000, disputed.

The second is the chronology. The standard sequence has Mapungubwe rise, fall, and hand off to Great Zimbabwe, which in turn hands off to Khami: a tidy relay of capitals. In 2013 Chirikure, Mark Pollard, Manyanga and Bandama published a Bayesian model of the site's radiocarbon dates in Antiquity and found that building here began in the late 12th or early 13th century, peaked across the 14th and 15th, and continued into at least the 16th or 17th. That means occupation at Great Zimbabwe overlapped with Mapungubwe rather than succeeding it. The relay becomes something messier and more interesting: several centres of comparable power standing at the same time, competing rather than inheriting.

The paper's subtitle explains why this took until 2013. It is about "re-threading the sequence of a vandalised monument". Most of the stratigraphy that would have answered the question was shovelled away before anyone thought to record it.

The denial, on the record

Karl Mauch reached the ruins in 1871, decided they were Ophir and the palace of the Queen of Sheba, and claimed the people living around them had only been there forty years. Theodore Bent, digging in 1891, settled on Phoenicians, on the strength of a resemblance he thought he saw between the soapstone birds and Near Eastern work. Richard Nicklin Hall argued for a Sabaean settlement out of southern Arabia. Augustus Henry Keane tied the site to the biblical land of Havilah. Leo Frobenius asserted in 1930 that the builders were Sumerians from near the Caspian, with foundation dates as early as 4000 BCE. Set those side by side and the pattern is the argument: the claims contradict each other flatly, and share exactly one premise.

Then in 1902 Hall was put in charge of the site and set about clearing it. He stripped deposits up to two metres deep in places, in his own words to remove the filth and decadence of African occupation. What he was removing was the evidence. He was not alone in it: Rhodesia Ancient Ruins Ltd dug the site commercially, for profit, in the same years.

Professional archaeology answered quickly and has never wavered. David Randall-MacIver excavated in 1905 and concluded the city was African and medieval. Gertrude Caton-Thompson repeated the exercise in 1929 with stratigraphic control, placed the origin no earlier than the 9th or 10th century CE, and rejected the exotic-builder hypotheses on stratigraphic and artefactual grounds. Radiocarbon programmes from the 1950s onward have produced dates consistent with occupation from roughly the 11th to the 15th centuries, and every excavation since has confirmed the conclusion. It is worth adding, because this article is not in the business of laundering anybody, that Caton-Thompson's own reasoning carried assumptions of its own. Part of her argument was that a more advanced civilisation would have built in straight lines and right angles rather than curves.

The politics did not stop when the archaeology settled. Under Rhodesian rule the state pressed for decades against the African-origin conclusion, and Peter Garlake, whose 1973 book is still a standard archaeological account of the site, was forced out of the country over it. The modern nation took its name from these ruins at independence in 1980. When you next hear that a monument was too sophisticated for the people living beside it, remember that the argument has a track record, and it is not a good one.

The gold under the walls

At its height in the 13th to 15th centuries the state held authority over something like 100,000 square kilometres between the Zambezi and the Limpopo. Its rulers were known as the Mambo. The wealth came from cattle and agriculture, and above all from controlling the export of gold and ivory to the Swahili ports on the East African coast.

That is not inference from imports alone. Gold was worked here. Excavations have recovered crucibles and reused pottery sherds carrying gold prills from stratified contexts, and in 2023 a team led by Shadreck Chirikure published more than 100 crucibles and gold-processing vessels from the Eastern Ridge Ruins in Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences. It is the most significant recent work at the site, and it moves the gold from the trade ledger into the workshop.

The imports run the other way: Persian glass, Chinese ceramics including celadon, glass beads, and copper coins minted at Kilwa on the Swahili coast. In a place with no written records of its own, those objects are the only externally dated things in the ground.

Where the water came from

The most interesting recent work here is not about walls at all. Great Zimbabwe sits in a region of periodic drought with no obvious perennial supply for a large town, and the ground around it is pitted with depressions known by the Shona term dhaka, long read as nothing more than borrow pits where clay was dug for floors and plaster. In 2023 a team led by Innocent Pikirayi, with Bongumenzi Nxumalo, Federica Sulas, Munyaradzi Elton Sagiya, David Stott, Soren Kristiansen, Shadreck Chirikure and Tendai Musindo, published a study in Anthropocene arguing they were reservoirs as well. LiDAR mapping found more of them than are visible on the ground, and the team estimates the pits could hold at least 18,000 cubic metres of water at one time, filled by surface runoff and groundwater and drawn down through the dry season and through longer droughts.

That is the sort of finding that changes what a city is understood to be. The walls are what everyone photographs. The holes in the ground are what let anybody live inside them.

The bird that came back in two pieces

Eight carved soapstone birds stood on monoliths at Great Zimbabwe, a form found at this site and nowhere else, and one of them appears on Zimbabwe's flag. In 1889 the hunter and trader Willie Posselt took one, prising it off its base over the objections of the Shona people present, who held the birds sacred. That bird was later broken in two. Around 1907 the lower portion was sold to the Museum fur Volkerkunde in Berlin for 500 Reichsmark. The upper portion stayed in southern Africa. The Berlin fragment was carried off to the Soviet Union as war spoils and did not return to Germany until the early 1990s. The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation agreed in February 2000 to hand it over as a permanent loan, keeping formal ownership. The two halves were finally set back together and installed at the site museum on 6 May 2004, one hundred and fifteen years after the bird was taken. Edward Matenga's 2011 monograph on the birds is the specialist account of both the carvings and their return.

Alignment claims, and one worth refusing

This site attracts no shortage of astronomical claims, and they are not all of one kind, so it is worth separating them.

Richard Wade and others have run compass surveys of the main enclosures and reported that some entrance passages and wall orientations correspond approximately to particular star risings and to the southern solstice sunrise. The most discussed case is the eastern entrance of the Great Enclosure, argued to face the rising of Canopus, a star that matters in southern African agricultural calendars. That is published archaeoastronomy rather than fringe writing, and it deserves to be read on its merits. It is also not consensus: none of the alignments has been independently replicated at the precision needed to demonstrate intent, and where a structure has many broadly oriented entrances, an accidental correspondence is statistically likely rather than surprising. Open question.

The stronger claim is that the Hill Complex was laid out as a horizon calendar, with gaps in the walling framing solstice and equinox sunrises. It circulates in documentary and tourism material. It has never been published with measured bearings by any named researcher. We are naming it here so that it can be refused: absent bearings, it is not a finding, and we will not repeat it.

What is not known

The state left no writing. Everything about its politics has to be read out of stone, soil and imports. Two mainstream debates are live, and neither has anything to do with the colonial-era builder claims. The first is what drove the state's rise: Thomas Huffman has argued for a primarily internal religious and political dynamic, while Chirikure and others emphasise an entangled relationship between local innovation and Indian Ocean commerce. The second is how authority was organised, with Chirikure among those challenging older models of a single centralised state in favour of a looser network of tribute relationships. Both sides in both arguments rest on real evidence.

Why the city ceased to be a capital in the mid-to-late 15th century is also unresolved, with environmental degradation and resource depletion, shifts in the gold routes, political fragmentation, and the ordinary Shona practice of moving a capital all argued in the literature and no consensus on which was decisive. It was not entirely abandoned; there is evidence of later reoccupation, and the Zimbabwe tradition of dry-stone building carried on in the Mutapa kingdom to the north and the Torwa state at Khami to the south-west. Portuguese traders were recording oral accounts of a great stone palace in the interior from the early 16th century, well before any European reached it.

And the conical tower inside the Great Enclosure is solid all the way through, and nobody knows what it was for. It has been read as a symbolic grain bin standing for royal wealth, as a fertility symbol, and as a pure prestige statement. No excavation has settled it. That sentence is more honest than any of the guesses attached to it.

What our engines found

Nothing, and the reason is ours rather than the site's. Our alignment engine measures great-circle distance ratios between catalogued sites. Inside a 200 km radius of Great Zimbabwe our atlas currently holds no other catalogued site at all. There is no geometry to measure, so there is no result, and we are not going to invent one.

That gap deserves to be named for what it is. An atlas thin in southern Africa, describing a monument whose achievement was denied for a century on racial grounds, is a combination we are not going to paper over with a manufactured number. A sparse catalogue is a hole in our data. It is never evidence of absence in prehistory, and anyone who tells you otherwise is reading a limitation as a finding.

One limit worth stating plainly, because it is the one most often glossed over. This test compares positions between monuments. It says nothing about any building's own proportions, its height, base, slope or perimeter. That is a separate question, and at several sites a genuinely open one.
