On 20 June 1987 two schoolboys, Aleksandr Voronkov and Aleksandr Ezril, told an archaeological survey team about some odd embankments in the grass of a southern Ural valley. The team, led by Gennady Zdanovich, was there to clear the valley of anything worth recording before it was drowned by a reservoir, and it had the Sintashta complex, found in 1968, behind it as a guide to what steppe fortifications look like on the ground. Zdanovich announced the find the same evening. What the embankments turned out to be was a fortified Bronze Age town, laid out as two concentric rings, standing at the confluence of the Bolshaya Karaganka and Utyaganka rivers about 8 kilometres north-north-west of Amursky village.
The schoolboys are the version that gets told, and it is not the whole of it. The rings were already visible as circular marks on Soviet cartographic aerial photographs taken in 1952, where nobody recognised them for what they were. A town of that size can sit in plain view in an archive for thirty-five years.

The town that stopped a reservoir
The reservoir was due for completion in 1989 and its builders wanted it filled by the spring of 1988. What followed was a four-year campaign by archaeologists, academics and the press, running straight into a Soviet ministry that was not used to losing. Academician Boris Piotrovsky of the State Hermitage put his own weight behind the Chelyabinsk archaeologists, which is the part usually compressed into the phrase public and scholarly pressure. The ministry lost, partly on the merits and partly because the Soviet Union was coming apart around it. In April 1991 the Council of Ministers cancelled the reservoir and declared Arkaim a historical and geographical museum. Zdanovich established the Arkaim Nature and History Reserve in the early 1990s, as a branch of the Ilmensky State Reserve of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Sites are rarely saved this way and it is worth pausing on how close it was.
One design, executed once
Arkaim was built, not accumulated. The outer defensive wall is about 160 metres in diameter, four to five metres thick and stood something over five metres high, fronted by a ditch of about two metres, all of it adobe and unfired brick reinforced with a timber framework. Published sources disagree over whether that two-metre figure is the ditch's width or its depth, and we cannot settle it from what is in print, so take the number and leave the dimension open. Inside are two rings of semi-subterranean houses: 39 or 40 in the outer ring and 27 in the inner on the counts usually given, with published figures ranging from roughly 35 to 40 outer and 25 to 27 inner, around 60 dwellings in all, each covering between 110 and 180 square metres. They share walls. Their doors open onto a single circular street paved with wooden blocks, and running under that street is a covered drainage channel with collection pits. There is a central plaza roughly 25 by 27 metres. Four entrances pass through both walls, and the principal one faces west. Excavators found hearths, cellars, wells and traces of metallurgical furnaces inside the houses, which is to say most households were smelting. As earth-and-timber fortifications of the Eurasian Bronze Age steppe go, very few survive in this condition.
The steppe around it was not the steppe you would walk across today. Spore-pollen spectra from buried soils at and around the site indicate that the regional climate in the Middle Bronze Age was warmer and wetter than it is now, which is worth holding in mind before deciding what sixty households could have fed themselves on.

How many people lived here is contested. Zdanovich put it at 1,500 to 2,500, a figure other researchers treat as plausible but not firmly established. The wider literature on Sintashta fortified settlements gives population estimates of 200 to 700 per site. Those are not small discrepancies and we would not pick between them. Traces of field systems, with canals and ditches, have been identified outside the walls, but how much of the food supply they represent is still under discussion, so the fields do not settle it either. The dating has also moved: early estimates put Arkaim in the 17th or 16th centuries BC, and the current reading is closer to 2050 to 1900 BC, inside a wider published envelope of about 2150 to 1650 BC across radiocarbon and archaeomagnetic results, and inside a Sintashta culture usually dated 2200 to 1900 BC and sometimes stretched to 1750 BC. Archaeomagnetic dating of the hearths corroborates the radiocarbon.
Arkaim was occupied for something on the order of two centuries and then left, and before it was left it was burned. That much is established. Who set the fire is not. The account you will read almost everywhere is that the inhabitants took their belongings and torched the place behind them, leaving archaeologists an unusually clean floor plan and no bodies in the houses. Attackers are the alternative, and it has not been excluded. The published evidence does not distinguish the two, and we are not going to choose on the strength of which version reads better. What is not in doubt is the outcome: a complete Bronze Age town plan, drains and all, which is a rarer thing than a temple.
About 8,000 square metres, roughly half the settlement, has been excavated. The other half was mapped without digging, by archaeomagnetic survey and remote sensing, which is how the full plan was recovered at all, and it is being kept back for methods that do not exist yet. The cemetery associated with the town, the Bolshekaraganskiy kurgan, has produced human remains, horse bones and grave goods including bronze weapons and ornaments. Zdanovich led a further expedition in 2016 at the nearby Sintashta IV burial complex.
The chariots next door
Arkaim belongs to a cluster Zdanovich named the Country of Towns: more than 20 fortified Sintashta settlements, most found from the air, spread across a block of steppe roughly 350 to 400 kilometres north to south and 120 to 150 kilometres east to west, taking in the Chelyabinsk and Orenburg regions, northern Kazakhstan and Bashkortostan. The archaeologist Fyodor Petrov has pointed out that the tidiness of that block may be an artefact of where people have looked, and that Sintashta-type settlements further into Orenburg would blur its edges considerably.
What the cemeteries of this culture contain is the earliest known spoke-wheeled chariots anywhere. The wheel impressions survive in grave pits at Sintashta itself, at Krivoe Ozero and at Kamennyi Ambar, and the radiocarbon dates for those contexts fall mostly before 2000 BC. Horses were sacrificed and buried with them. Genetically, the Sintashta population carries a mix of Yamnaya-related and early European farmer ancestry that puts it close to the Corded Ware groups of Europe.
Whether these people spoke Proto-Indo-Iranian is a live argument rather than a settled result, and it is worth stating as one. A substantial body of archaeologists and linguists supports the identification, and it is the reading you will meet most often. Others hold that the archaeological link to the historically attested Indo-Iranian languages is circumstantial, and that the traits usually offered in support of it, fire-cult hearths and horse burials among them, recur across cultures with no relationship to one another. It is a real and substantial claim about the ancestry of a language family, it requires no mysticism whatsoever, and it is not closed.
A sheep with plague in it
The most interesting recent finding at Arkaim came out of a bone nobody was looking at. In August 2025 a team led by Ian Light-Maka and Felix Key at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology, with Christina Warinner at Harvard and Taylor Hermes at Arkansas, published in Cell the genome of Yersinia pestis recovered from a 4,000-year-old sheep from Arkaim. The Late Neolithic and Bronze Age plague lineage had until then only ever been found in human remains. This is the first time it has been found in an animal, and it changes the shape of the problem: the lineage had no genes for flea transmission, so the route into human populations was something else, and herded livestock now look like the bridge between a wild reservoir on the steppe and the people who tended them. A settlement of full-time herders with smelting furnaces in every house is exactly where you would expect that bridge to be busiest.
The claims that grew on it
Since the 1990s Arkaim has carried a second life it did not ask for. Russian neo-pagan, Roerichian and Zoroastrian movements gather on its hills at the solstice; it has been called the birthplace of Zoroaster, the Asgard of the Norse gods and the homeland of the Aryans. The historian Victor Shnirelman documented this in Museum International in 1998 and again in Inner Asia in 1999, and his account is not flattering to anyone: the find, he argues, set off a chain reaction of speculation and ethnic nationalism aimed at political ends. Vladimir Putin visited in 2005 and met Zdanovich, and Shnirelman records Zdanovich himself presenting the site as a candidate national idea for Russia. Even the sober reading of the circular plan as a model of the cosmos drawn from Vedic and Avestan texts is an interpretation, and it is the doorway most of the rest comes through.
The specific astronomical claim attached to Arkaim is worth stating in its strongest form rather than waving off. In 2003 K. K. Bystrushkin argued that Arkaim is a horizon observatory that outperforms Stonehenge: 18 astronomical events observable using 30 architectural elements, against Stonehenge's 10 events using 22, at an accuracy of one minute of arc where Stonehenge manages 10 arcminutes to a degree. That work was published in Russian academic contexts, and it is a named researcher's analysis rather than a piece of internet folklore, which is why we are giving it a paragraph instead of a sneer. Our objection is not that it is heretical, it is that one arcminute is a finer tolerance than the surviving fabric can carry. Arkaim's walls are eroded earth and decayed timber known largely from foundation traces, and a bearing taken across them cannot be recovered to a sixtieth of a degree. We could not find the analysis replicated or adopted in the peer-reviewed archaeoastronomical literature outside Russia, and the observatory reading is not universally accepted even among sources sympathetic to it. Until somebody reworks it against the excavated post positions with stated error bars, it stays an open question rather than a result.
A smaller version of the same question attaches to the gates. Arkaim's four entrances are routinely described as set on the cardinal points, or on solstitial sunrise and sunset. The broad orientation is consistent with other Bronze Age enclosures on the Eurasian steppe. Whether it was intentional and precise, or practical site planning that lands near the cardinal axes because that is where such planning tends to land, is not settled by any survey data published internationally, and neither answer would be surprising.
What our engines found
We ran the same test here as everywhere else, with the settings fixed in advance and identical at every one of the fifty sites we cover: a 200 km search radius, at least 12 km between sampled sites, 15 sites, a 2 per cent tolerance, and 2,000 Monte Carlo runs against a null model resampled from real catalogued sites in the same region. The settings are frozen because the answer moves if you tune them, and tuning them after seeing the answer is exactly the trick we object to elsewhere. Arkaim returned 5 golden-ratio pairs where chance predicts 1.9, giving p = 0.0470.
That clears the usual significance line, and this is the only site in fifty where the golden ratio also outruns our control ratios: phi scored 2.63 times its expected count while the best arbitrary control managed 1.54. Everywhere else that phi clears significance, an arbitrary number matches or beats it. Here it does not, and that makes Arkaim the single most interesting result our engine has produced.
We are still not going to oversell it. The engine could reach only 6 catalogued sites on this stretch of steppe, and on a sample that small a striking ratio can appear for no reason at all. This is a reason to look harder, not a discovery, and we would rather hand you a live question than a false answer. Given how much invented mysticism already surrounds this site, we are especially unwilling to add to it.
We publish the misses because a tool that only reports its hits is not measuring anything. Every figure above is reproducible from the same coordinates, the same settings and the same seed.
One limit worth stating plainly, because it is the one most often glossed over. This test compares positions between monuments. It says nothing about any building's own proportions, its height, base, slope or perimeter. That is a separate question, and at several sites a genuinely open one.
Nor does it bear on the observatory argument above, which is a claim about sightlines within a single settlement rather than about distances between settlements, and no p-value in this section can confirm or refute it.
