Why this site. Around 8,000 individually finished soldiers were buried to guard one emperor, and most of them, along with the burial mound itself, are still underground. Ancient sources describe a map of the empire with rivers of mercury inside, and soil surveys over the mound really do return anomalous mercury readings, which is one of the more striking cases of a written account matching the instruments. China is waiting for better preservation technology before opening it. Our own geometry test around Xi'an reached only six catalogued sites and found nothing, which is a limit on our data rather than a finding.
