The Ziggurat of Ur: Climbing Toward the Moon God

The bricks are stamped. Facing the great mudbrick mass at Ur, in courses laid around 2100 BC, are baked bricks carrying the name of Ur-Nammu, king of the Third Dynasty of Ur, pressed into the clay before firing. The building told you who built it, thousands of times over, in a form that survives being knocked down. Those stamps are also the evidence: they assign the lowest and largest stage to Ur-Nammu, and Nabonidus's foundation cylinders assign the upper rebuilding to him. The date of this building rests on epigraphy and historical synchronism rather than on any published radiocarbon or luminescence dating of the fabric, which is strong evidence of a particular kind and worth naming as such. Southern Mesopotamia has no stone and no mountains, so its people made both out of river mud, and this is the best preserved result.

What the builders called it

The Sumerian name was Etemenniguru. Translations differ in tone rather than substance: renderings range from the house whose foundation platform is clad in awe to the house whose foundation creates terror. Either way it is a statement about the base, not the summit, which suits a structure that is essentially a platform for a shrine. The god was Nanna, the moon, patron of the city.

The lower stage measures roughly 64 by 45 metres, which is well attested. Almost nothing else about the elevation is. Original height estimates in circulation range from about 21 to about 30 metres, and they are comparisons with other ziggurats and readings of ancient texts rather than measurements of this one. The three converging staircases are real and visible. The three stages usually drawn above them are not: everything above the lowest stage was rebuilt in the 6th century BC, and no evidence survives of how Ur-Nammu left the upper terraces. Ur-Nammu began the work, around 2112 BC on the conventional middle chronology, and his son Shulgi is usually credited with completing it, although the brick stamps carry Ur-Nammu's name on the stage that survives. The core is solid mudbrick; the skin is baked brick set in bitumen, each brick roughly 30 centimetres square and 7 thick, weighing up to around 15 kilograms. The lower portion alone took something in the order of 720,000 of them. That is the real scale of the achievement, and it is administrative as much as architectural: somebody had to make, count, move and pay for every one. Blue-glazed bricks have also been recovered from the site, which suggests the upper portions carried decorative facing, though not how much or where.

Leonard Woolley's own notebook

Woolley dug at Ur from 1922 to 1934, and his report on the ziggurat in the Penn Museum's journal is still worth reading in preference to anything written about it since. Two observations stand out. The first is that the longer sides are not straight: he recorded them as slightly convex, as if to give an appearance of greater strength to the centre. The second is more practical. Running right through the thickness of the burnt brick wall are what he called weeper holes, cut to drain the filling behind so the mud core would not swell and burst its skin in the winter rains. Mudbrick melts, and the builders knew it. A ziggurat is not a monument you finish; it is a monument you commit to maintaining.

He was not the first to look. Pietro della Valle noted the ziggurat in the mid-seventeenth century. John George Taylor, British consul at Basra, dug into the base in the 1850s and recovered the cuneiform cylinders that identified the mound as Ur and named both Ur-Nammu and Nabonidus, which is why his rough excavation still matters; William Kennett Loftus published an early measured description in the same decade; and H. R. Hall cleared part of the south-eastern face in 1919. Woolley's wider excavation produced the Royal Cemetery, the Standard of Ur and large archives of Ur III administrative tablets, which between them are most of what anyone knows about how the city was run.

Two of Woolley's claims that did not hold

Woolley was a superb excavator and a very quick interpreter, which is a dangerous combination. In 1929 he sank a deep cut at Ur and found clean, water-laid mud, eleven feet of it in the larger excavation, sealed beneath ordinary occupation rubbish. He announced that he had found the Flood of Genesis, and the world's newspapers agreed. Then flood deposits turned up elsewhere at different levels: at Kish, dug by Stephen Langdon and L. Watelin, and at Shuruppak, and they did not correlate with each other or with Ur. Woolley's own deposit was too early for the Mesopotamian flood tradition. Max Mallowan's later assessment was a severe but local inundation. There was a flood. It was not the Flood.

The second claim is quieter and has travelled further. In 1925, about 150 metres from the ziggurat, Woolley excavated a room containing objects whose ages differed by centuries, arranged in order, accompanied by inscribed clay drums that read like labels and carry more than one language. He identified it as a museum, and credited it to Ennigaldi-Nanna, daughter of Nabonidus, installed as high priestess of Nanna at Ur. The objects are real and the labelled drums are real; that part is not in dispute, and it is remarkable enough. The word museum is Woolley's, and it smuggles in modern assumptions about public access and public purpose that a single room of curated heirlooms cannot support. It has been repeated as established fact ever since, usually without the name of the man who coined it. The find is solid; the label on the find is an interpretation.

Nabonidus rebuilt it, and said so

Nabonidus, last king of Babylon, rebuilt the ziggurat in the 6th century BC, roughly fifteen centuries after Ur-Nammu, a gap about the same as the one between us and the fall of the western Roman empire. His foundation cylinders, recovered by excavators, record that he did it. He found little standing above the lowest stage, and what he put back is what the upper part of the building now is. How closely it followed the Ur III form is not known, and cannot be, because nothing of the Ur III upper terraces survives to compare it with. That has a consequence people rarely draw. The familiar three-tier profile, the thing anyone pictures when they hear the word ziggurat, may be a Neo-Babylonian idea of what a Sumerian building ought to have looked like rather than the Sumerian building itself.

One figure should be dropped rather than repeated. It is often said that Nabonidus rebuilt the ziggurat in seven stages. No evidence from Ur supports that, the wording is ambiguous between seven stages of building and seven phases of work, and seven-stage ziggurats belong above all to descriptions of the Etemenanki at Babylon, which is the likeliest place for the number to have come from. We are naming it here so that it can be refused: without a source it is not a fact about this building.

Installing his daughter as high priestess of the moon god was the same instinct applied to an office: a deliberate revival of a post that was already ancient when he revived it.

The first author, and the argument about her

Enheduanna, daughter of Sargon of Akkad, served as high priestess here around 2300 BC. Her name is attached to the Temple Hymns and to the Exaltation of Inanna, and an alabaster disk excavated at Ur shows a priestess presiding at an offering and names her in its inscription. She is routinely called the first author in history known by name, and Pyramason thinks that is probably right. It is not certain, and the reason is worth stating. Every surviving copy of the poems is Old Babylonian, written down roughly 500 years after she lived. William Hallo and J. J. A. van Dijk, who published the corpus, read the attribution as genuine. Eleanor Robson has argued that later scribes may have had more than a copyist's hand in the texts, and could have attached her name to build a cultural identity. Nobody has a manuscript from her lifetime. The honest position is that we have a strong ancient tradition of her authorship and no way at present to test it.

The city was bigger than the dig

Woolley's Ur was a walled city of about 50 hectares. Survey work by Emily Hammer and Angelo Di Michele in 2017 and 2019 changed the picture substantially: 208 test pits at 100 metre intervals across 310 hectares, combined with declassified U-2 aerial photographs from 1959, drone photogrammetry and magnetometry. With its suburbs, Ur runs to between 74 and 140 hectares depending on the period, peaking around 140 in the Isin-Larsa period. The city seems to have begun as two separate settlements that grew at different rates and later joined. Ur was not the compact anomaly it has been described as; it was a sprawl, like Uruk and Lagash, and almost all of the sprawl is unexcavated.

The dynasty that built the ziggurat fell around 2004 BC, usually attributed to an Elamite invasion. The city itself outlasted it by a long way, but not indefinitely: Ur was largely abandoned by the early centuries BC, most probably as the Euphrates shifted course and the trade that had made the place worth living in went with the water.

Three campaigns, one building

What a visitor is looking at is not a Sumerian monument that was later repaired. It is a palimpsest of at least two ancient building campaigns and one modern restoration, and it is worth walking through the layers in order.

The lowest stage is Ur-Nammu's, around 2100 BC, on the evidence of the brick stamps. Whether that stage is entirely Ur III, or incorporates something earlier, has not been resolved. Everything above it is Nabonidus, 6th century BC. Iraq's Directorate-General of Antiquities carried out consolidation work in the early 1960s, two decades before the intervention everyone notices. Then the lowest facade and the monumental staircase were rebuilt in the 1980s on Saddam Hussein's orders, which is why the bottom of the building looks crisp in photographs while everything above it is eroded mudbrick.

The most recent layer is military. The structure carries over 400 bullet holes and nearby craters from the 1991 Gulf War, a count that comes from a United States military-era damage assessment rather than from any archaeological survey. An air base operated beside the site from that war through the 2000s. What decades of that traffic did to the deposits underground has never been assessed in any published work, and the sacred precinct's full extent is itself imperfectly recorded, because Woolley did not reach every structure in it. Ur entered the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2016. Neither we nor the specialist literature we have been able to consult can point to fieldwork at Ur in the last few years, which for a site in this condition is a gap in the record rather than a sign that interest has gone.

What our engines found

We ran the same test here as everywhere else, with the settings fixed in advance and identical at every one of the fifty sites we cover: a 200 km search radius, at least 12 km between sampled sites, 15 sites, a 2 per cent tolerance, and 2,000 Monte Carlo runs against a null model resampled from real catalogued sites in the same region. The settings are frozen because the answer moves if you tune them, and tuning them after seeing the answer is exactly the trick we object to elsewhere. Ziggurat of Ur returned 33 golden-ratio pairs where chance predicts 35.3, giving p = 0.6332.

That is fewer than chance would predict, and it is not significant. The control points the same way: the arbitrary ratio pi/2 scored 1.16 times its expected count against phi's 0.93, so nothing here singles out the golden ratio.

We publish the misses because a tool that only reports its hits is not measuring anything. Every figure above is reproducible from the same coordinates, the same settings and the same seed.

One limit worth stating plainly, because it is the one most often glossed over. This test compares positions between monuments. It says nothing about any building's own proportions, its height, base, slope or perimeter. That is a separate question, and at several sites a genuinely open one. Here it is doubly worth saying, because the proportions above the lowest stage are not the original ones in any case.

For the layering, the evidence to look for is the brick stamps of Ur-Nammu and the foundation cylinders of Nabonidus, both recovered from the building itself and both published: they are the reason the attribution is a matter of record rather than of inference.
