Ring of Brodgar: The Perfect Circle of Orkney

The most famous stone circle in Orkney is also the one nobody has managed to date. The Ring of Brodgar stands on a narrow isthmus between the lochs of Stenness and Harray, water on both horizons, and it is usually given as 2500 to 2000 BC. That bracket is inference from its neighbours, not a measurement of the ring itself: there is no reliable radiocarbon chronology for the monument at all, very little organic material has come from sealed contexts associated with the stone sockets, and published estimates run from about 2700 to 2000 BC with different researchers favouring different parts of the range. What dating there is rests on typological comparison with other Grooved Ware sites and on the sequence of the landscape around it. A few hundred metres away, the Stones of Stenness has radiocarbon showing work under way by 3100 BC. Brodgar has nothing comparable.

How many stones is a matter of counting

The circle is 104 metres across, which makes it the third largest henge monument in Britain after Avebury and Stanton Drew, and unlike most so-called circles, which are flattened or egg-shaped, this one is close to a true circle. Twenty-seven stones are standing, which is the figure Historic Environment Scotland uses; UNESCO's description of the World Heritage Site counts 36 surviving stones, because stumps and fallen slabs are stones too. Both figures are right and they answer different questions, which is worth remembering whenever a single number is quoted at you.

The original total is a different matter, and it has quietly come loose. Sixty is the number that has been repeated for generations, extrapolated from the spacing of the stones and stumps that survive. A tomographic geophysical survey of the south-eastern arc, published in 2020 by Brend and colleagues in Landscapes Revealed, found that the spacing does not support that count uniformly. No agreed alternative figure has replaced it. Until one does, sixty is a tradition rather than a measurement, and we will not state it as fact. The tallest stones stand at the south and west, thin blades of Orkney sandstone. The outlier to the south-east is called the Comet Stone, and it sits on its own low platform outside the ring.

A ditch cut from bedrock

The stones are the part people photograph and the ditch is the part that stops archaeologists. It encircles the ring for about 380 metres, cut down to as much as 3 metres deep, with published widths of 9 or 10 metres depending on the account, and it was quarried out of solid sandstone bedrock with stone, bone and wooden tools; antler picks are usually named too, though they are not confirmed from this site. One estimate of the labour involved puts it at around 80,000 hours. Two causeways cross it, on the north-west and the south-east, and there is no significant external bank surviving, which is unusual for a henge and separates Brodgar from most of the southern British examples.

Some of the stone came a long way. Slabs were quarried at Vestrafiold in Sandwick parish, more than 10 kilometres off, which adds organised transport over difficult ground to the labour the ditch already implies. Set that effort beside what a small excavation found in 2008: two of the stone sockets proved only 18 and 27 centimetres deep. At the Stones of Stenness the equivalent sockets run from 90 centimetres to over a metre. Mark Edmonds reads the shallow settings as evidence that the act of raising the stones mattered more than their permanence, that the building was the point rather than the built thing. The counter-reading is more prosaic and equally reasonable: stable bedrock needs less depth than loose soil, and the builders knew it. The evidence does not choose between them.

The excavated evidence points to something less tidy than a single build. The ditch appears to have been cut in sections, plausibly by separate work parties drawn from different parts of Orkney, and the stones may have been added later, going up over a long period rather than in one campaign. On that reading Brodgar is less a monument that was designed and then executed, and more a project that a number of communities each took a share of. It is also possible it was never actually finished. The 2008 excavation attempted to settle the chronology and its results were reported as preliminary; nothing since has closed the question.

The stones that are missing may not have simply fallen. Excavation indicates that some were deliberately toppled, snapped off at or below ground level, or taken away in antiquity. Breaks below ground level are not what weathering does. The reading now generally preferred is that this was an act of closure, a monument ceremonially dismantled rather than one neglected into ruin, which is a different kind of history from slow attrition.

What the shallow sockets do to the observatory question

Alexander Thom read the ring as a precision lunar observatory, and that claim has never been generally accepted nor finally disposed of. The 2008 sockets bear on it more directly than anything else recovered here. If the stones were not meant to stand permanently, which is one reading of settings that shallow, then a precision instrument is a poor description of what was built. If shallow settings in bedrock are simply sufficient, which is the other reading, the sockets say nothing about intent either way. Neither reading settles Thom, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What can be said is that the site has never been fully excavated, that its construction date is poorly constrained, and that a precision claim about a monument nobody can date is resting on very little.

The ring is one item in a crowded landscape

Within about 5 square kilometres of Brodgar there are two circle-henges, four chambered tombs, groups of standing stones, single stones, barrows, cairns and mounds. The builders worked in the Grooved Ware tradition, the same cultural horizon that produced the Stones of Stenness and the buildings of the Ness of Brodgar. Maeshowe, the great chambered tomb on the same neck of land, is built so that sunlight runs up the passage and strikes the rear wall of the chamber for a few days either side of the midwinter solstice. It also carries roughly 30 runic inscriptions cut by Norsemen in the 12th century, closer to graffiti than to memorials, one of them boasting that these runes were carved by the man most skilled in runes west of the ocean. The Orkneyinga saga describes a party sheltering in the mound from a snowstorm and breaking in, and the archaeology broadly agrees with it. James Farrer went through the roof in July 1861 and cleared the chamber with what later archaeologists have described as crude technique.

People lived here as well as buried and gathered. At Barnhouse, found in 1984 by Colin Richards and dug between 1986 and 1991, at least 15 house bases were recorded, occupied from about 3000 BC to about 2600 BC. The houses have the central hearths, wall beds, stone dressers and internal drains familiar from Skara Brae, but stand free rather than huddled under midden. After the settlement was abandoned, a ceremonial building went up on the spot with a room about 7 metres square inside walls 3 metres thick, its entrance placed so the midsummer sunset shines along the passage.

The dig that changed the picture, and then closed

Between the two circles lies the Ness of Brodgar, unsuspected until 2003 and excavated from 2004 until August 2024. Under Nick Card's direction the project uncovered a walled complex spread over about three hectares with at least 45 identified buildings. Structure Ten measures 25 metres by 20 with walls 4 metres thick. Structure One had stonework painted in yellows, reds and oranges with ochre made from haematite bound in animal fat, milk or egg, the earliest known decorated building interiors in Britain. Around 400 cattle tibias were deposited near Structure Ten in what looks like a closing feast, dated to roughly 2400 to 2200 BC. Published spans for the complex differ: activity is given as running from about 3500 BC through to abandonment around 2200 BC, while other summaries put the foundation at 3300 to 3100 BC and the main abandonment at 2500 to 2300 BC. The disagreement is worth knowing about, because it is part of a larger unresolved question. Whether the ring was raised while the Ness was in use, or after it had been given up, is one of the genuinely open problems in Orcadian archaeology, and neither monument is dated well enough to settle it.

The trenches are now backfilled and the site is closed to visitors, with the team due back for one final limited season in July 2026 before the work becomes publication. That sequence is the thing to take from Orkney: the biggest change in our understanding of Neolithic Britain in decades came out of a field nobody had dug, next to a monument everybody had photographed.

What the antiquarians called it

Brodgar picked up the name Temple of the Sun from antiquarian writers, with Stenness cast as its lunar partner and a story attached about young people making vows to Woden at the stones. That folklore is documented, and it is documented as folklore: it belongs to the 18th and 19th centuries, not to the people who cut the ditch. The same landscape shows what happens when the two get confused. The Odin Stone at Stenness, a holed stone used in oath-taking, was smashed in December 1814 by a tenant farmer, Captain W. Mackay, who was tired of visitors crossing his land. One tradition ended with a sledgehammer because another tradition had made the field busy.

What our engines found

We ran the same test here as everywhere else, with the settings fixed in advance and identical at every one of the fifty sites we cover: a 200 km search radius, at least 12 km between sampled sites, 15 sites, a 2 per cent tolerance, and 2,000 Monte Carlo runs against a null model resampled from real catalogued sites in the same region. The settings are frozen because the answer moves if you tune them, and tuning them after seeing the answer is exactly the trick we object to elsewhere. Ring of Brodgar returned 40 golden-ratio pairs where chance predicts 37.7, giving p = 0.4263.

That is a little more than chance would predict, and it is not significant. The control points the same way: the arbitrary ratio 2.0 scored 1.25 times its expected count against phi's 1.06, so nothing here singles out the golden ratio.

The collinear test is the one that does return something: 27 three-site alignments against 12.4 expected, p = 0.0115. Before anyone builds on that, the honest caveat is terrain. Sites string out along river valleys, coastlines and narrow necks of buildable land, and geography produces straight lines without anyone planning them. It is a number worth investigating, not a conclusion.

We publish the misses because a tool that only reports its hits is not measuring anything. Every figure above is reproducible from the same coordinates, the same settings and the same seed.

One limit worth stating plainly, because it is the one most often glossed over. This test compares positions between monuments. It says nothing about any building's own proportions, its height, base, slope or perimeter. That is a separate question, and at several sites a genuinely open one.
