Mohenjo-daro had something in the order of 700 wells, roughly one for every three houses, and covered drains running beneath the major streets with access holes so they could be cleared out. Around 2500 BC, while Giza was going up, a city on the Indus was spending its public effort on water and waste. Nearly every house had a bathing platform. No other Bronze Age settlement anywhere comes close to that standard, and a great deal of the world still does not. Peak population is usually given as somewhere between 20,000 and 40,000, an estimate whose own authors label it weak, which is the level of honesty most numbers about this city deserve. The figure of 40,000 that circulates on its own is the ceiling of that range, not a floor.

Two cities, two dates
The date attached to Mohenjo-daro is 2500 BC, and that date is doing a particular job. It belongs to the planned brick city you can walk through, which is Mature Harappan, conventionally bracketed at roughly 2600 to 1900 BC. It is not the date the place was first settled. Radiocarbon dates published in 2026 put first occupation in the earlier Kot Diji phase, around 3300 BC, some eight centuries before the grid was laid out. Those dates are reported by Archaeology Magazine, and until the underlying paper is published and checked they belong in a sentence as a report rather than as a settled figure. Both numbers are useful. Neither replaces the other, because they are measuring different things.

The same programme dates something the popular description of this city leaves out altogether: a massive mudbrick perimeter wall, first identified by Mortimer Wheeler in 1950, built from around 2800 to 2600 BC and maintained until at least 2200 BC. Mohenjo-daro is almost always presented as an open grid of streets and drains. It had a wall around it for most of its life, and that wall's full extent and plan have still not been traced.
The end is a range too, not a date. The city empties across roughly 1900 to 1700 BC, which is several generations rather than an event.
Names that arrived with the excavators
It is worth knowing who applied the labels, because the labels have outlived the evidence for them. R. D. Banerji of the Archaeological Survey of India identified the mounds at the end of the 1910s; systematic excavation began in 1921 and 1922, and the site was not recognised by scholarship outside India until 1922. John Marshall and Ernest Mackay dug through the 1920s and 1930s. Mortimer Wheeler cut his REM trench into the western flank of the citadel in 1950. George Dales dug in the mid-1960s, and after him large-scale excavation effectively stopped. Nearly every famous name on this site was coined by one of those men in his first season.
On the high mound stands the Great Bath: a tank of fitted brick 12 metres by 7 and 2.4 metres deep, waterproofed with a lining of bitumen, with steps descending at both ends. That much is measurement. The rest is inference, and the inference is reasonable, but it is inference. What the tank was for is genuinely contested. Ritual purification is the reading most often repeated, but civic and administrative uses are argued as seriously, and there is no inscription and no image anywhere on the site that settles between them.
Beside it is the building Wheeler identified in 1950 as the Great Granary, complete with grain storage bays. Jonathan Mark Kenoyer has pointed out the obvious problem: no grain has ever been found there. It is now often called the Great Hall, which is a polite way of saying a large building of unknown purpose. The Priest-King, 17.5 centimetres of steatite found in 1927, is not known to be a priest or a king. The Dancing Girl, 10.5 centimetres of bronze found in 1926, is not known to be dancing. None of these names are lies. They are excavators' first guesses that hardened into captions over a century of repetition, and a reader who takes them at face value has been told a story nobody set out to tell.
The massacre that was not
Wheeler's other legacy is a sentence: Indra stands accused. He read the scattered human remains in the streets as the wreckage of an Aryan invasion, matched to the Vedic epithet for a destroyer of forts. In 1964 George Dales took the claim apart in the Penn Museum's Expedition magazine under the title The Mythical Massacre at Mohenjo-daro, and the arithmetic alone is enough.
Nine years of excavation, from 1922 to 1931, across a city roughly three miles around, produced about 37 skeletons or skeletal fragments from the Indus period. Not one came from the fortified citadel, which is where a last stand would happen. They came from scattered contexts in the lower town: 14 in a single room of House V in the HR area, nine in Block 10A including five children, six in a lane covered by loose earth free of brick debris, one fragmentary skeleton in the accumulated fill of Deadman's Lane rather than on the lane's surface. Several look like ordinary burials cut into ground that had already been abandoned. Above all, there is no destruction level over the last phase of the city and no sign of extensive burning. Dales's conclusion was not that the invasion is unproven but that there is no crime scene.
And no nuclear war either
The best known alternative claim about Mohenjo-daro is that it was destroyed by an ancient atomic blast. Its strongest form runs like this: bodies were found lying unburied in the streets, glassy fused material marks an epicentre, David Davenport placed that epicentre at roughly 50 yards across, and Sanskrit epic poetry describes a weapon brighter than the sun.
The claim has a paper trail, and the trail is worth following. It starts as a vague and unsourced assertion by the Russian writer Alexander Gorbovsky in the 1960s. It was given book length by David Davenport and Ettore Vincenti in 1979. From there it was amplified by writers such as Erich von Däniken and David Childress, and it has been recirculating ever since without anyone adding a measurement to it.
It rests on the same 37 skeletons, which are not contemporaneous with each other, are not all unburied and are not in the street. The fused material identified at the site is pottery and frit, which is what a kiln produces. The buildings are still standing, which no atomic blast permits. The instructive part is where the evidence came from: the nuclear claim borrowed its skeletons from Wheeler's massacre, an interpretation archaeologists themselves abandoned sixty years ago. A theory that inherits a discarded reading and then escalates it is not an alternative to the mainstream account. It is a fossil of an older version of it.
The river had already moved
The tidy version of the collapse says a great river dried up and took the cities with it. A study published in Nature Communications in 2017 by Ajit Singh, Sanjeev Gupta and colleagues complicates that badly. Using optically stimulated luminescence dating on the Ghaggar-Hakra palaeochannel, the channel usually identified with the lost river of the tradition, they showed it was an old course of the Sutlej, and that the Sutlej began abandoning it more than 15,000 years ago and had completed the switch shortly after about 8,000 years ago. Indus urban settlements along that valley date to roughly 4,600 to 3,900 years ago. They grew along a channel the river had left thousands of years earlier, and the authors argue the attraction was exactly that: a valley with water in it but without a Himalayan river's habit of jumping its banks.
That finding is about the Ghaggar-Hakra sites, not about Mohenjo-daro, which sits on the Indus itself, and it would be dishonest to stretch it. What it does is dismantle the version in which one drying river explains everything. It is also worth noting that Dales was already arguing in 1964 for rising water tables, salination and repeated flooding rather than invaders, and that the decline around 1900 BC looks like a long environmental squeeze rather than an event.
The city after the city
The mound standing behind the Great Bath in every photograph is not Harappan. A Buddhist stupa was built on the Citadel Mound in the early first millennium AD, two thousand years or so after the grid was laid out, and coins of the Kushan period, second to fifth century AD, have come out of the site. A hoard of them was found in 2023, during the conservation work that followed the floods of the previous year. A place routinely presented as a Bronze Age city that simply stopped has an occupation record running on into late antiquity, and the standard Harappan-only framing has no room for it.
Nobody has read a sentence
Roughly 4,000 inscribed objects survive, mostly seals and small commercial items. The inscriptions are short, usually around five signs. Nisha Yadav has shown that 67 signs account for about 80 per cent of the corpus. There is no bilingual text, no Rosetta equivalent, and no agreed language behind the signs.
The dispute is more fundamental than most coverage admits. In 2004 Steve Farmer, Richard Sproat and Michael Witzel argued that the Indus signs are not writing at all, but a non-linguistic symbol system of the kind used for ownership, ritual or accounting. Rajesh Rao and colleagues replied with conditional-entropy analysis arguing that the statistical structure of the sequences sits with written languages rather than with non-linguistic systems; Sproat replied to that in turn. The exchange has not been settled. In January 2025 M. K. Stalin, chief minister of Tamil Nadu, announced a prize of one million dollars for a decipherment. The plain state of it after a century is that nobody has read a sentence of Indus, and a serious minority of specialists doubt there is a sentence there to read.
What the bones say, and what is still buried
In 2019 Vasant Shinde, Vagheesh Narasimhan and colleagues published in Cell a single genome recovered from the cemetery at Rakhigarhi, in a context dated between 2800 and 2300 BC. It carries no detectable steppe pastoralist ancestry, and its Iranian-related component descends from a lineage that split from Iranian plateau lineages before farming began in Iran. The reading the authors offer is that farming in South Asia arose largely among local foragers rather than arriving with a mass migration from the west. It is one genome, and they say so themselves. It is also the only Indus genome anyone has managed to recover, which tells you what the heat has done to the DNA in every other burial.
The last large excavation at Mohenjo-daro was George Dales's, in 1964 and 1965. Digging effectively stopped afterwards because salt drawn up through the brick attacks whatever is exposed. Salt efflorescence and flood damage are both documented and both current: record monsoon rain in 2022 damaged standing walls and prompted the conservation campaign that turned up the Kushan coins. A deadline of 2030 for the site's loss circulates widely, attributed to Pakistani archaeologists warning in 2012, but we have not been able to attach that date to a named source or a published assessment, and we will not repeat it as a forecast. The threat is real. The clock on it is not sourced.
A dry core drilling programme in 2015 showed the settlement extends beyond the area that has been uncovered. There is also a floor below which excavation cannot go: the lowest occupation levels now lie beneath the regional water table, so the earliest phases of the city, the ones the 2026 radiocarbon dates describe, may never be reachable by conventional digging at all. Most of Mohenjo-daro is still in the ground, some of it permanently, and the live argument among the people who care most about it is whether the rest should stay there.
What our engines found
Nothing, and the reason is ours rather than the site's. Our alignment engine measures great-circle distance ratios between catalogued sites. Inside a 200 km radius of Mohenjo-daro our atlas currently holds no other catalogued site at all. There is no geometry to measure, so there is no result, and we are not going to invent one.
There is a particular irony in that, since the Indus produced over a thousand known settlements and one of the most systematically planned urban landscapes of the Bronze Age. If any region should reward a geometry engine, it is this one. Our inability to test it is a statement about our catalogue and nothing else.
A sparse catalogue is a hole in our data. It is never evidence of absence in prehistory, and anyone who tells you otherwise is reading a limitation as a finding. South Asia is on our roadmap, and when coverage lands this section will carry a real result you can reproduce yourself.
One limit worth stating plainly, because it is the one most often glossed over. This test compares positions between monuments. It says nothing about any building's own proportions, its height, base, slope or perimeter. That is a separate question, and at several sites a genuinely open one.
