Meroe: The Country With More Pyramids Than Egypt

Ask which country has the most pyramids and almost everyone answers Egypt. The answer is Sudan, by more than a factor of two: around 255 pyramids were built by the Nubian kingdoms, and more than 200 of them stand in three cemeteries at Meroe alone. Meroe was the capital of the Kingdom of Kush from roughly 590 BC to AD 350, on the stretch of country between the Nile and the Atbara that ancient geographers called the Island of Meroe. Kush was no imitation of Egypt. A century before the court moved south, Kushite kings had conquered Egypt outright and ruled it as the 25th Dynasty; when they withdrew they kept the pyramid, changed its shape, and went on building them for centuries after Egypt had stopped.

A different pyramid, not a smaller one

The Nubian pyramid is its own design. They stand between about 6 and 30 metres tall and rise at somewhere between about 65 and 70 degrees. Published slope figures vary, and the single value of 70 degrees that circulates most widely is the top of that band rather than a measured constant. Either way they read as spires next to the Egyptian profile: an Egyptian pyramid of the same height would sit on a footprint at least five times larger. Each has a chapel with a pylon gateway built against its eastern face, where the offerings were made, and the burial chamber is not in the mass above but cut into the rock beneath, reached by a steep descending stairway. The three royal cemeteries are conventionally designated North, South and West. In the northern cemetery there are 41 tombs, 38 of them belonging to monarchs who ruled between roughly 250 BC and AD 320. The tallest pyramid at Meroe, about 30 metres, is attributed to Queen Amanishakheto, though attributions here are less secure than the signage suggests, for reasons the section on the Meroitic script sets out.

The dates are worth separating, because three different things happened at three different times. Nubian royal pyramid building begins around 700 BC, but it begins further north, in the Napatan cemeteries at el-Kurru and Nuri. The court moved south to Meroe around 590 BC. The royal cemetery followed nearly three centuries after that, and the pyramid fields here were in use from roughly 300 BC to about AD 350. Taken together that is a longer continuous run of pyramid construction than Egypt ever managed.

The chapels carry most of what is known about Kushite religion. Their reliefs, and the objects recovered from them, are the primary evidence for both the funerary cult and the kingdom's reach: pottery, weapons, horse harness, wooden furniture, coloured glass, and metal vessels of Egyptian, Greek and Roman manufacture. A tomb chapel at Meroe is a trade record as much as a religious one.

The title that turned into a name

Kush was ruled at times by sovereign queens, and the word attached to them is one of the most commonly mangled in popular history. Kandake was a title, not a name. Greek and Latin writers turned it into Candace and treated it as a personal name, which is how the New Testament comes to mention Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, as though she were an individual. She was an office.

The best documented of these rulers fought Rome. In 25 BC, with the Roman prefect's troops committed to a campaign in Arabia, a Kushite force raided Roman Egypt. Strabo describes the war that followed, the counter-attack by Petronius, and a Kushite queen who was blind in one eye. The fighting ran to 22 BC and ended with Kushite envoys escorted to Augustus on the island of Samos, where they got terms good enough that the frontier stayed quiet. The queen is almost certainly the Amanirenas named alongside King Akinidad on the Hamadab stela, but it is worth being precise: that identification is an inference joining two bodies of evidence which never mention each other, and the exact relationships between the royal figures named on the stelae are not clear.

The most eloquent object from that war was found by John Garstang in December 1910. Digging near mound M 292 at Meroe, he came on a bronze head of Augustus, over life size, its calcite irises and glass pupils still in place, buried about two and a half metres down in a clean pocket of sand beneath the steps of a temple. It had been placed so that anyone climbing towards the altar walked over the emperor's face. The Sudan Excavation Committee gave it to the British Museum in 1911, where it still is.

A script we can read and a language we cannot

Kush wrote in Meroitic, in two forms, a hieroglyphic script for monuments and a cursive one for everything else, both adapted from Egyptian models. It uses 23 signs plus a word divider of two or three dots, which makes it an alphasyllabary rather than a picture writing system. Francis Llewellyn Griffith worked out the sound values between 1907 and 1911, so the texts can be pronounced. Understanding them is another matter. More than 2,000 Meroitic inscriptions survive, written between about 300 BC and AD 350, and the language behind them is still largely opaque: royal names, titles and formulae are readable, and long stretches of ordinary sentence are not. Claude Rilly has argued that Meroitic belongs to the Northern East Sudanic branch of the Nilo-Saharan family, which for the first time supplies related living languages to compare against. If that holds, the decipherment is a research programme rather than a dead end. A royal literature is sitting in the museum cases waiting.

That gap has a concrete cost, and it is worth naming because it is usually left out. Because the language is only partly understood, the order in which the pyramids were built and the attribution of individual tombs to named monarchs are both actively debated. The owner list in general use was drawn up from architectural and stratigraphic inference rather than from readable texts, and it has been revised more than once since. The identifications you see on signage, in captions and in this article are working hypotheses, not readings. When somebody tells you with confidence whose pyramid you are standing in front of, the honest version of that sentence ends with a question mark.

The man who blew the tops off, and the story about him that is wrong

Look at photographs of Meroe and many pyramids are decapitated. That is not the desert's work. In 1834 the Italian treasure hunter Giuseppe Ferlini took the summits off, and in Queen Amanishakheto's pyramid, N6, the tallest in the necropolis, he found gold and silver jewellery that had survived because that tomb had never been robbed. The usual telling has him wrecking dozens of pyramids. His own account describes taking apart five, possibly six: four small ones first, then Amanishakheto's, and the larger claim is not supported by the sources. That correction matters in an uncomfortable direction rather than a comforting one, because it means most of the missing summits at Meroe have no name attached at all. Nobody was recording. Ferlini is remembered because he wrote his method down.

What happened to the jewellery is its own story. Europe did not believe him. The British Museum's experts concluded the pieces were fake and declined to buy. Only after Carlo Pancaldi published a report in 1836 did opinion turn; Ludwig I of Bavaria bought part of the hoard for Munich, and Berlin acquired the rest on Karl Richard Lepsius's advice. Amanishakheto's grave goods are still split between the two cities.

One thing is worth knowing before you photograph a summit: not all of them are ancient fabric. A UNESCO advisory mission in 2019 found that conservation work on several pyramids had involved large-scale reconstruction in new material. Its judgement was that the property's overall integrity remained acceptable, but that authenticity had been compromised in heritage-management terms. Some of the tidiest tops at Meroe are recent.

The survey everyone still uses

Systematic archaeology at Meroe begins with two men working at almost the same time on different parts of the site. John Garstang dug for the University of Liverpool from about 1909 to 1914, concentrating on the urban settlement rather than the cemeteries; the bronze Augustus came out of that campaign. George Reisner, for Harvard and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, surveyed the cemeteries, and it is his numbering that every reference to pyramid N6 or N14 still depends on more than a century later. Reisner also produced the catalogue of who was buried where. That catalogue rested heavily on inference, and it is the one that has been revised repeatedly since.

The city is in a worse state of knowledge than the cemeteries. Large parts of the settlement have never been excavated, and the spoil heaps left by the early campaigns sit on top of stratigraphy nobody has since been able to read cleanly. Its extent, its layout and its population are all still open questions. Anything you read that gives the royal city a confident size or a confident population is going well beyond what has been dug.

Iron, and a phrase that outran the evidence

Archibald Sayce, whose report prompted John Garstang to begin digging the town mounds for the University of Liverpool in 1910, looked at the slag heaps around Meroe and called the place the Birmingham of Africa. The phrase stuck for a century and did more work than it had earned, and it belongs to that older scholarship rather than to current readings of the site. Jane Humphris and colleagues went back to those heaps with radiocarbon dating and found that ironworking at Meroe was under way on a significant scale by at least the seventh or sixth century BC and continued for more than a thousand years, into the first half of the fifth century AD. That is one of the longest ironmaking records anywhere in Africa, and it pushes the industry back well before the excavated workshops suggested. What the dates do not do is confirm the bigger claim resting on Sayce's phrase, that iron is what made Kush powerful. That remains an argument rather than a finding, and the excavators say so themselves.

One claim worth refusing

A claim circulates that pyramid building started at Meroe and that Egypt took the form from Kush rather than the other way round. It does not survive the dates. Nubian royal pyramids begin around 700 BC. Egypt's begin in the third millennium BC, more than two thousand years earlier, and the Kushite kings who adopted the form had ruled Egypt themselves for the better part of a century before the court withdrew south. Nothing in the chronology supports the reversal, and we are naming it here so that it can be refused rather than repeated.

There is a real question underneath the bad one, and it deserves not to be dragged down with it. What Kush borrowed from Egypt, what it adapted, and what it invented outright is a live subject in the specialist literature, and László Török's work is the standard treatment of it. The steep slope, the eastern chapel, the rock-cut chamber below, the ruling queens and the run of centuries after Egypt had given the form up are all Kushite. Answering that question properly does not require inverting the calendar, and is not helped by it.

What is at risk right now

This is the part the guidebooks have not caught up with. Since fighting broke out in Sudan in April 2023, the country's archaeological record has been under direct attack. The Rapid Support Forces took the area around the Sudan National Museum in Khartoum in June 2023; video shows cases being opened and satellite imagery shows lorries leaving loaded. The head of Sudan's National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums has put the loss at roughly 90 per cent of the museum's holdings, including its archaeological gold. More than 20 museums have been damaged, a figure put at about 110 million dollars by September 2025, and looted objects have surfaced on open marketplaces at absurd prices. On 14 January 2024 airstrikes hit Naqa and Musawwarat es-Sufra, two Meroitic sites carried on the same World Heritage inscription as Meroe itself. UNESCO has drawn on its Heritage Emergency Fund and warned that trafficked material is entering the art market. The pyramid fields are still standing in the desert. It is the record of what was found in them that is being destroyed.

At Meroe itself the damage is slower and quieter. All active conservation and archaeological fieldwork stopped when the war began and has not resumed. Site guardians and archaeologists report the fabric deteriorating without it: wind-blown sand, salt crystallisation in the stone, and vegetation left unchecked. UNESCO has publicly called on the military actors in the conflict neither to use the site nor to target it. A monument that had a conservation problem in 2019 has had no conservation at all since 2023.

What our engines found

Nothing usable, and the reason is ours rather than the site's. Our alignment engine measures great-circle distance ratios between catalogued sites. Inside a 200 km radius of Meroe our atlas holds only 9 catalogued sites, and the engine could work with 3. That is far too little to test anything, so we report the gap instead of a number.

Over two hundred pyramids stand in this desert and our atlas can see almost none of them, which tells you something about whose monuments got catalogued first. A sparse catalogue is a hole in our data. It is never evidence of absence in prehistory, and anyone who tells you otherwise is reading a limitation as a finding. Sudan is high on our roadmap, and when coverage lands this section will carry a real result you can reproduce yourself.

One limit worth stating plainly, because it is the one most often glossed over. This test compares positions between monuments. It says nothing about any building's own proportions, its height, base, slope or perimeter. The Nubian pyramid angle of roughly 65 to 70 degrees against Egypt's 51 to 54 is a measured architectural fact, and it belongs to that second category.
