The eleven churches at Lalibela were not built. They were subtracted. Masons started at the top of a sloping rock face, cut deep trenches to isolate a block of stone, then hollowed it out from the roof down: doorways, windows, columns, aisles, vaults and carved capitals, all of it taken away rather than assembled, with every mistake permanent. There is no foundation, no scaffolding phase, no wall going up. And unlike almost everything else in this collection, the result was never abandoned. Priests of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church hold services in these rooms today.

The rock is not granite
Reference works still describe the churches as cut from granite, Britannica among them. They are not. In 2011 Alberto Renzulli, Fabrizio Antonelli, Claudio Margottini, Patrizia Santi and Fabio Fratini published a petrographic study in the Journal of Cultural Heritage that settled the question. The rock is a basaltic scoria deposit, partly welded and altered by hydrothermal fluids, from the same transitional basalts that make up the northern Ethiopian plateau. Earlier literature had called it weathered basic tuff or ignimbrite; it is neither, though it has a tuff-like look. It is between 35 and 70 per cent vesicles by volume, which is to say that more than a third of it is air.
That single fact is the whole design decision. Scoria this porous can be cut with iron tools at a speed no granite would allow. The workable layer is roughly 30 to 40 metres thick and is sandwiched between massive basalt above and below that is considerably harder, so the depth of the churches is set by the depth of the good rock. The same porosity is why the churches are now in trouble, because water goes straight into the fabric rather than running off it.
The church shaped like a cross
Biete Ghiorgis, the House of Saint George, stands alone in its own pit west of the southern group, joined to the rest by a system of trenches. Its courtyard is about 12 metres deep. Its roof is carved as a Greek cross, three nested outlines cut flush into the ground you walk up on, which is why every photograph of it is taken from above. It is one of very few buildings anywhere whose plan is best read by standing on the roof rather than by walking inside. Local tradition says Saint George arrived on horseback, unimpressed that ten churches had been finished with none for him, and pilgrims are shown marks in the entrance trench attributed to his horse.

The largest of the eleven is Biete Medhane Alem, the House of the Saviour of the World, generally called the largest monolithic church on Earth. Guinness records it at 33.5 metres long, 23.5 metres wide and 11 metres high. Britannica gives 33 by 23 by 10. The gap is small but real, and it is a fair reminder that a building carved out of a hillside has no crisp edges to measure to. No formal survey of the churches has been published, so every dimension here is approximate.

The buildings are older than the king
The tradition is clear and specific. King Gebre Mesqel Lalibela of the Zagwe dynasty, reigning around 1181 to 1221, ordered the whole complex as a New Jerusalem after conquest made pilgrimage to the real one dangerous, and in the version told to pilgrims angels took over the work at night. The New Jerusalem programme is not folklore added later: the site's own toponymy carries it, and the stream dividing the two church groups is named the Yordannos, the Jordan. The town itself was called Roha before it took the king's name. The Zagwe were Christian kings of Agaw origin who ruled from roughly the tenth century to the thirteenth, and the Solomonid dynasty displaced them in 1270.
In 2010 a French team, Francois-Xavier Fauvelle-Aymar, Laurent Bruxelles, Romain Mensan, Claire Bosc-Tiesse, Marie-Laure Derat and Emmanuel Fritsch, published a different kind of argument in Antiquity. The method is what makes it good. Because the churches were cut from a single rock mass, the order in which material was removed is recoverable: a trench that truncates another trench came later, and a facade cut below an older ground level came after that level was lowered. They read the entire site as a stratigraphy and recovered five phases. A troglodytic phase of small tunnels and domed chambers. A hypogean phase turning those into cubic rooms with Aksumite-style doorways. A first monumental phase producing genuinely monolithic churches. A second in which the external ground was cut down further so new facades could be opened beneath the old ones. Then a filling-in phase after the 16th century, as the site silted up.
The consequence is blunt. Most of the hypogean monuments were not begun as churches at all and were converted later, and the eastern group was probably part of a fortified complex. King Lalibela may well have driven the final and most ambitious phase, and given the place its name and its Jerusalem programme, but he did not start it. Crediting the whole site to one reign compresses three or four centuries of quarrying into a single lifetime.
Beyond that, the chronology is genuinely unsettled, and it is worth naming who argues what rather than repeating the tidy summary that circulates. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes the site as built in four or five phases between the seventh and thirteenth centuries, which reads as a consensus and is not one. David Phillipson, working from the architecture, argues that three churches in particular, Merkorios, Gabriel-Rufael and Danagel, were first cut as Aksumite-period palatial or defensive structures, possibly as early as the seventh or eighth century, and were turned into churches later. Aksumite motifs are visible in several of the churches, including the characteristic window forms and blind arcading. Michael Gervers argues the other end of the same problem, that carving continued well past King Lalibela's reign and possibly into the fifteenth century. And Phillipson's evidence has been challenged on its own terms: Aksumite forms went on being used as prestige references for centuries after the kingdom fell, so their presence does not by itself date a building early.
Absolute dating has not broken the deadlock, and the reason is structural rather than a failure of effort. Carving a church removes rock instead of depositing material, so the act of construction destroyed most of the stratigraphy that would ordinarily carry datable samples. There is no published, agreed radiocarbon sequence for the churches themselves.
What there is, since 2009, is real excavation. A multidisciplinary mission worked here across four seasons, in 2009, 2010, 2011 and part of 2012, studying the rock-cut stratigraphy and digging associated contexts, among them the cemetery at Qedemt, where three distinct groups of graves were identified spanning the eleventh century to the mid-seventeenth. That is the most detailed archaeological analysis the site has had. It should have been easier: restoration work in the 1960s disturbed a large number of graves and erased stratigraphy, and the published literature treats that damage as a significant obstacle to reconstructing the early phases. Lalibela is a site where the rescue work of one generation removed the evidence the next generation needed.
What the first outsider wrote
Francisco Alvares, a Portuguese priest attached to the embassy that reached the Ethiopian court in the 1520s, is the first person from outside the region known to have described the churches, and his reaction is more useful than most modern ones. Such buildings, he wrote, cannot as it appears to him be found in the world. Then he stopped describing them, saying he feared he would not be believed. Ethiopia had its own literature on the subject long before he arrived: the Gadla Lalibela, the saint's life, which tells of the king carried to Jerusalem and instructed by Christ to build a second one, and which holds that to see these churches is like seeing the face of Christ.
Not known, and not accepted
Three things about the making of Lalibela are simply undocumented. Where the excavated rock went is one: an enormous volume of scoria came out of these pits and no published account says where it was put. How the work was coordinated is another, because carving interconnected churches, trenches and tunnels to a plan, without survey instruments, is a harder problem than the cutting itself and nobody has established how it was solved. The size of the workforce and the time it took are the third, and there is no consensus on either.
Those gaps are regularly filled with answers that are not evidence. The oldest is that foreign craftsmen must have done it; Phillipson's view is that the role of outsiders has been greatly exaggerated in the older literature, and the reason to believe him is on the ground across Tigray, where a long and well documented tradition of rock-hewn churches predates Lalibela by centuries. Lalibela is the summit of an Ethiopian tradition, not an anomaly dropped into one. The related claim that medieval Ethiopian labour could not have done this without lost technology runs straight into the petrography above: the rock is soft, and that is why this site is here.
A claim also circulates that the churches were cut by the Knights Templar somewhere between about 1187 and 1225, sometimes attached to the Ark. No academic researcher supports it. No documentary or physical evidence connects the Templars to the Ethiopian highlands, and Ethiopian historians, Ethiopian archaeologists and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church all reject it. We are naming it here in order to refuse it.
One more, because it is the kind of claim this site attracts. The churches are oriented as Ethiopian Orthodox liturgical practice requires, with the sanctuary to the east. No published archaeoastronomical measurement establishes that the complex targets solstices, stars or any other celestial event, and the assertions that its layout encodes celestial geometry have no bearings behind them. Absent measurements, that is not a finding, and we will not repeat it.
The emergency is directly overhead
The thing no tour dwells on is the roof over the roof. In 2008, with European Union funding, the Ethiopian government put large shelters over five of the churches to keep rain off them. They were designed to last ten years. They were still standing more than fifteen years later, water was getting through them, and the priests who care for the buildings had come to regard the shelters themselves as the more urgent hazard. UNESCO classifies most of the eleven as being in critical condition. Biete Amanuel is described as at imminent risk of collapse. Cracks on interior and exterior walls are widening, faster during heavy rain. France's development agency has been planning permanent replacements, with removal of the existing structures targeted for 2025 or later, pending technical studies.
Underneath the shelter question sits a harder one. Geological and structural survey has identified numerous fracture systems running through the rock, some of them natural and some created by the carving itself, and they present a continuing stability risk. Sensors and deformometers have been installed to monitor whether those fractures are moving. Conservation and monitoring work at the site has involved the World Monuments Fund and Expertise France alongside the Ethiopian authorities.
The two halves of that belong together. These are among the best preserved medieval buildings in the Horn of Africa precisely because they were never abandoned, and they are in the worst condition they have been in since they were cut, because the rock that made them quick to carve also lets the water in.
What our engines found
Nothing usable, and the reason is ours rather than the site's. Our alignment engine measures great-circle distance ratios between catalogued sites. Inside a 200 km radius of Lalibela our atlas holds only 5 catalogued sites, and the engine could work with 4. That is far too little to test anything, so we report the gap instead of a number.
A sparse catalogue is a hole in our data. It is never evidence of absence in prehistory, and anyone who tells you otherwise is reading a limitation as a finding. The Ethiopian highlands are on our roadmap, and when coverage lands this section will carry a real result you can reproduce yourself.
One limit worth stating plainly, because it is the one most often glossed over. This test compares positions between monuments. It says nothing about any building's own proportions, its height, base, slope or perimeter. That is a separate question, and at several sites a genuinely open one.
