On 11 June 1991 the aerial archaeologist Otto Braasch flew over a stubble field near Goseck in Saxony-Anhalt and photographed a slightly distorted oval of darker growth in the crop. Local pilots had been reporting something odd in that field since the 1970s. Under it was a ditched enclosure about 75 metres across, dug around 4900 BC by farmers of the Stroke Ornamented Pottery culture, with two concentric rings of timber palisade inside and three gaps cut through the rings facing north, south-east and south-west. Stand in the middle and the two southern gaps frame the points on the horizon where the sun rises and sets at midwinter.

Dug once, published twice
Alfred Volker ran geophysics across the site in 1995 and picked up pits inside and outside the ring. Between 2002 and 2004 the Institute for Art History and Archaeologies of Europe at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg excavated the whole enclosure in three campaigns under François Bertemes and Peter Biehl, working with the State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology Saxony-Anhalt and with a team from Berkeley joining in 2004, covering 0.7 hectares. That makes Goseck one of the most comprehensively excavated Neolithic roundels in central Europe. A landscape project under Bertemes ran on from 2005 to 2013, setting the enclosure within the Neolithic settlement pattern around it, and geophysical survey around the site continues, refining the construction sequence and probing for features nobody has dug yet.
The ditch was cut in a V section; published depths run from about 1.5 metres to about 1.8 metres depending on which report you read. The pottery puts the enclosure in the Stichbandkeramik, roughly 4900 to 4600 BC, with some accounts closing it at 4550 BC. Some accounts also describe an earthen bank alongside the ditch, but its presence, its position and its scale are not established in the published excavation record, so we are not going to draw one for you.
Then the site went quiet for nearly twenty years while the report was written. Norma Henkel published the full excavation in 2023 as volume 88 of the Saxony-Anhalt state monument office series. That gap matters more than it sounds. For two decades everything the public heard about Goseck came from press releases and reconstructions rather than from the evidence, which is how a working hypothesis hardens into a slogan. Bayesian modelling of the radiocarbon dates now suggests roughly 140 years of use with alternating phases of maintenance, neglect and repair. Goseck was not one act of building. It was a place people kept coming back to fix. Whether the palisades themselves were wholly replaced at any point across those centuries, or only patched, is not determined by the published record.
One thing to hold in mind while walking around the site today: none of the timber is old. No original wood survived at all, and the enclosure is known entirely from post-holes and ditch fills. The reconstruction opened on 21 December 2005 uses 1,675 oak posts set to about 2.5 metres, and that height, along with the density of the palisade, is a working hypothesis drawn from the excavation data rather than a measured original. The post count is from the ground. The building above it is an argument.
What the gates point at
The two southern gates are the famous ones: winter solstice sunrise through the south-east, winter solstice sunset through the south-west. Those bearings were fixed against GPS survey data by the excavation team and published by Bertemes, Biehl and colleagues, which is the part most retellings leave out and the part that matters. Henkel's report adds further openings in the palisade rings that she reads as marking the summer solstice and a date at the very end of April, the point in the year later cultures called Beltane; both of those secondary alignments remain contested, for their precision and for whether they were intended at all. The important thing about all of them is not the astronomy but the method. The bearings were taken from excavated post holes and gate structures, not from stones lying on the surface, which is the difference between Goseck and most sites that get called observatories.

The northern gate is the odd one. It misses true north by a few degrees. In 2009 Marianna Ridderstad published an argument that the deviation is deliberate and targets Edasich, the brightest star then sitting nearest the celestial pole, tying the gate to the widespread North Eurasian idea of a pillar holding up the sky. She is careful about her own case: finding north by bisecting sunrise and sunset can be wrong by several degrees, and her argument is that this particular error is the wrong shape for that. We have not found the claim tested or taken up elsewhere, so we log it as one published argument rather than a result.
The phrase specialists keep striking out
Solar observatory is the wording on the signage, in the tourist copy and in the headline of this article. The archaeologists who actually work on these enclosures do not want it. A recent review of new research on Neolithic circular enclosures in Antiquity says the term is out of place: the structure of these sites cannot be explained by astronomy alone, and where they were built was decided by landscape as much as by sky. More pointedly, the State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology Saxony-Anhalt, which dug the site and holds the archive, officially presents Goseck as a ritual or cult structure rather than as a solar observatory. When the excavating authority declines your headline, that is worth more than any amount of argument from outside. The English-language literature also records the suspicion that the label stuck to Goseck mainly because it is good marketing.
We think both halves of that are true at once. The solstice alignments are real, measured and reproducible, and they were taken from excavated architecture rather than guessed. But an observatory is a building whose purpose is watching, and Goseck was plainly doing several things. Calling it the oldest solar observatory we can prove is defensible only if the emphasis falls on the word prove, and it is worth saying that the people who dug it would put the emphasis elsewhere.
Cattle skulls, a hand, and a class of monument
Cattle dominate the animal bone. Skull fragments turn up unusually often and the excavation recovered roughly 30 horn cores. Burned pits appear at several points around the ditch system. The human material is stranger. A headless skeleton lay near the south-eastern gate. One pit with fire-reddened walls held the limb bones of an adult, without torso or skull, already decomposed when they went in. Another held the finger bones of an adult man lying in anatomical order, a hand placed as a hand. There is also a child's grave from the earlier Linear Pottery culture on the site.
Popular coverage takes this straight to human sacrifice, and it should not. The bones in the pits were placed there after the bodies had partly skeletonised somewhere else, which is a description of secondary burial as much as of killing. Henkel's 2023 monograph, the first full publication of the fully excavated site, characterises the deposits as evidence of complex mortuary or ritual practice and does not confirm sacrifice. Excarnation, secondary burial and ancestor veneration are all attested in Neolithic central Europe and all fit this material. Her reading of the assemblage as a whole is that Goseck was a place of offering and a place of sky-watching in the same breath, and the two functions were probably not separable to the people using it.
Somewhere between 120 and 150 of these circular enclosures are known across Central Europe, though published counts vary and higher figures circulate, scattered over roughly 800 kilometres of the Elbe and Danube basins through Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland. They belong overwhelmingly to the 49th to 47th centuries BC, and the whole phenomenon lasts only two or three centuries before it stops. Austrian examples run from 40 to 180 metres across; the largest Slovak ones reach 250 to 300 metres. Whether they amount to a networked tradition sharing a common cosmology, or a form that was reinvented repeatedly across a wide area, is a real open question, and an international conference in 2022 put it on a formal footing rather than settling it. Goseck is neither the biggest nor demonstrably the first. What it is, since 2023, is the most completely excavated and most fully published member of the class, which is a better claim to fame and a duller one.
The disc down the road
About 25 kilometres away, on the Mittelberg near Nebra, two men metal-detecting illegally in 1999 dug up a bronze disc inlaid with gold, damaged it with a spade, and sold it for 31,000 marks. It passed through several hands before the state archaeologist Harald Meller recovered it in a police operation in 2002. Its two gold arcs span 82 degrees, which is the angle between the summer and winter solstice sunset positions at this latitude, and it is usually described as the oldest concrete depiction of astronomical phenomena anywhere.
Its date is not quite settled. In 2020 Rupert Gebhard and Rüdiger Krause argued the disc is Iron Age rather than Bronze Age, chiefly on the grounds that the looters' find spot could not be trusted. Ernst Pernicka and colleagues answered them the same year, and the analyses of the disc, the objects found with it and the site all support the earlier date, currently around 1800 to 1600 BC with burial about 1600 to 1560 BC on radiocarbon from birch bark in the hilts of the swords buried alongside. One thing is worth stating flatly, because popular accounts run the two sites together as a single local tradition: the Nebra disc is more than three thousand years younger than the Goseck circle. They share a sky and a stretch of country. Nobody has traced a line of transmission between them.
What our engines found
We ran the same test here as everywhere else, with the settings fixed in advance and identical at every one of the fifty sites we cover: a 200 km search radius, at least 12 km between sampled sites, 15 sites, a 2 per cent tolerance, and 2,000 Monte Carlo runs against a null model resampled from real catalogued sites in the same region. The settings are frozen because the answer moves if you tune them, and tuning them after seeing the answer is exactly the trick we object to elsewhere. Goseck returned 48 golden-ratio pairs where chance predicts 41.5, giving p = 0.2394.
That is a little more than chance would predict, and it is not significant. The control points the same way: the arbitrary ratio pi/2 scored 1.33 times its expected count against phi's 1.16, so nothing here singles out the golden ratio.
We publish the misses because a tool that only reports its hits is not measuring anything. Every figure above is reproducible from the same coordinates, the same settings and the same seed.
One limit worth stating plainly, because it is the one most often glossed over. This test compares positions between monuments. It says nothing about any building's own proportions, its height, base, slope or perimeter. That is a separate question, and at several sites a genuinely open one.
It also says nothing about the bearings of Goseck's own gates, which is where this article spends most of its time; that is a question about one monument's architecture, and a distance test between monuments cannot settle it either way.
